The 2024 Remembrance Service at Oaklands Road War Memorial in Bexleyheath was a poignant and well-attended event, held to honour the sacrifices made by armed forces personnel throughout history. Organised by the Bexleyheath and Welling branch of the Royal British Legion, the service began with a parade featuring local veterans, youth groups, and military reservists. The congregation from Christ Church Bexleyheath also joined the ceremony, highlighting the strong community involvement in paying respects.

The service commenced at 10:40 AM, with attendees gathering in solemn reflection. A two-minute silence was observed at 11:00 AM, marking the national moment of remembrance. Following this, wreaths were laid by representatives from various groups, including the Mayor of Bexley,
The Oaklands War Memorial provided a fitting backdrop, with its inscriptions serving as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifices made during both World Wars and subsequent conflicts. Locals residents took the opportunity to visit the memorial, where additional tributes had been placed, including crosses commemorating fallen servicemen from the local area.
This year’s service was particularly notable for its turnout, with hundreds of people present, reflecting a growing sense of appreciation for the event’s significance. The collaboration between local organisations, including the Royal British Legion and Christ Church, ensured the ceremony was a meaningful tribute. With representatives from the armed forces, emergency service and local community groups this was a real sense of the Bexley community coming together.
